Supporting Lives at Every Stage

Each year, Palliative Care Week highlights the importance of end-of-life care. The 2025 theme, ‘What’s Your Plan?’ will serve as a reminder of the critical need to advocate for better and more comprehensive palliative care and to include Pastoral and spiritual care because of its widely acknowledged importance to someone with a life-limiting diagnosis. Íøºì±¬ÁϳԹÏÍøվ’s Chaplains and Pastoral Care team can have a profound impact on someone's well-being as they journey with someone with a life-limiting illness.

At Íøºì±¬ÁϳԹÏÍøÕ¾, our commitment to compassion drives our palliative care services, where the focus is beyond physical needs, providing support and understanding of emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing for everyone involved in the journey.

The Vital Role of Palliative Care

Palliative care is about enhancing the quality of life, not about health professionals giving up. It is complex medicine and addresses disease progression and pain management, provides emotional support, and ensures that individuals and their families have the resources they need to face the complexities and the practicalities of a life-limiting illness.

This specialised care is more than just the medical treatment; it provides a holistic approach that acknowledges the profound impact of serious illness on the mental wellbeing of patients and their loved ones, and just as important is our spiritual care as we reflect and transition out of this life.

One of Íøºì±¬ÁϳԹÏÍøվ’s chaplains at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Richard, reflects on the wisdom of an Australian Aboriginal proverb, offering a profound perspective when ministering to a palliative patient:

'We are all visitors to this time and place. We are passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love, and then we return home."

For many families, palliative care serves as a bridge during life’s most difficult transitions, fostering moments of connection and understanding to help address the physical and emotional and existential toll of illness.

Íøºì±¬ÁϳԹÏÍøվ’s Approach to Palliative Care

At Íøºì±¬ÁϳԹÏÍøÕ¾, we walk alongside individuals and families through the final stages of life with dignity, compassion, and care. Our Living Well Dying Well program offers a range of services designed to support people navigating end-of-life care, emotionally, spiritually, and practically.

Key pillars of the program include:

Living Well Dying Well is grounded in the belief that death is a natural part of life. Just as we begin life needing the care of others, we often leave this world in the same way. Grief is the price we pay for love—an experience as natural as it is profound—and we are meant to face it within the care of our communities.

As our needs evolve on this journey, our approach remains the same: to honour every life as precious. Everyone deserves respect, dignity, and support at the end of life. At Íøºì±¬ÁϳԹÏÍøÕ¾, we’re committed to helping people not only die well, but live well right to the very end.
